The story

After accepting a postdoctoral position in 2014, I was very excited about starting a new research experience in a country I knew only through journals and movies:

The United States of America (USA)

I started from my home country to prepare for my expatriation, looking for information about visa application, apartment renting, American life style, health care system… Even if I could find some answers to my questions here and there, it was very difficult to get full and correct information according to my specific situation as a future foreign postdoctoral fellow.

Once I arrived in the USA, I had to cope with many situations by myself for my moving and learned many things on a trial and error basis. I met many expatriated postdocs who experienced similar hurdles at their arrival in the USA:

What I heard postdocs say

Services in my state are used to deal with US citizens, but less with foreigners so it is difficult to get correct information.

I do not work on campus so potential interactions with other foreign postdoctoral researchers are limited.

There is no postdoctoral association in my university.

There are few international postdocs in my university/institute so the capacity and experience of the international office is limited.

My colleagues/boss (all Americans) are not aware of specific situations/treatments regarding my status as non-US citizen and cannot provide me with any guidance.

I cannot find information on internet regarding my specific situation as a foreign postdoctoral fellow in USA.

There are no other international postdocs in my laboratory/institute.

At least, with other international postdocs I know, we face similar situations so we try help each other.

Thus, the idea arose to create a website where PhDs from foreign countries could get useful information and tips to successfully prepare for their new life as postdoctoral fellows in the USA

PostdocInUSA was born!

The Ultimate Goal

By visiting PostdocInUSA, you will benefit from the experience and knowledge of international postdocs who perform(ed) their postdoctoral training in the USA.

Our primary goal is to provide information and tips for you to have a smooth start in your new postdoctoral life in the USA, and adapt to the American life in a heartbeat.

We are at the all beginning of this project and have the ambition to develop a community where PhDs from all countries could share all types of tips and information about their American experience.
